On this Mother’s Day, I can’t help but feel grateful for the time I’ve spent nurturing a young child who is near and dear to my heart. It has been the most challenging experience to have a sweet young life to invest in these past 3 years. When my boyfriend first introduced me to his little man, I was ecstatic about the idea of spending time with him and learning about him since I’ve always dreamt of having children.

As my boyfriend and I get closer, the idea of becoming a step-mother has brought about plenty of mixed emotions. For one, I already feel like Jeremiah’s step-mommy, but I also know that there are many complicated responsibilities that come with a permanent situation. This thought makes my heart skip a beat. Jeremiah’s at an age where his brain is like a sponge. Me being in his life right now and the choices I make around him can affect him forever. And, quite frankly, being a proper influence for him has been one of the hardest things for me to do. At this point he trusts me like he trusts his father and I have no earthly idea what I’m doing.

This “pre step-motherhood” experience has helped me understand just how hard it is for all of those mothers out there. The selflessness, the constant sacrifices, the fear of hurting or hindering the child are all factors I’ve come to understand, without having any true motherhood experience. I honestly can’t fathom how single mothers, with little or no help are able to do it! I’m not what most people would consider a “real” mother, but I believe I can empathize with the emotions and desires of someone who has any connection to a child.

To all of the mothers out there: I aspire to be as brave as you. I aspire to be as confident, loving, and as sacrificial as you are for your beautiful children. I hope that one day I can be that kind of mother to my own child, and in the meantime, I will continue to love little Jeremiah the best way I know how.

Moms, thank you for all you do! Happy Mother’s Day!
