“He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.” Matthew 28:6 (NIV)

Well guys, it’s that time of year again, the time where every department store is having a sale, bunny rabbits can be spotted on every corner, plastic fillable eggs are on every aisle of the grocery store, and almost every parent is running around trying to find old-fashioned wicker baskets.

It’s Easter!

I love Easter because it’s proof that spring is finally here, which means lots of sun, pretty blooming flowers, and I can finally take my favorite sandals out from under my bed. Can I get an amen?

But, as much as I love “Easter Time”, I can’t help but feel guilty that some years, it’s not until I start to prepare for Easter Sunday at church that I remember Wow… this is not about chocolate-covered eggs.

Easter is a celebration of life

The reason we celebrate Easter has little to do with bunnies and much to do with the resurrection of Jesus. Now, you might be saying, “But there are so many wonderful things that Christ did while on earth, why does the resurrection consume an entire holiday?”.

I’m so glad you asked!

Christ accomplished much during his time on earth including miracles, fulfilling the law, remaining sinless, and more. But without His getting up, we would still be dead in our sin.

Think about it: had Jesus died on the cross in order to accomplish salvation and remained in the grave, we would still be in the grave with Him. When the Bible tells us we’ve become one with the Lord, it’s a big deal!

Colossians 2:12-14 tells us that we were BURIED with Him in His death, which means we only become alive in Him because he rose first. If Jesus is still dead, then we’re all dead. But because He was resurrected, we are made one and UNITED with Him. This means that we’re alive as well! If you ask me, that is definitely worth celebrating!

“Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies””

John 11:25 (NASB)

That’s amazing news! We have a future hope all because Christ got up! The resurrection of Jesus and His work on the cross allows us to have eternal life when we believe in Him. Romans 10:9-10 says, “If you declare with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” This one scripture is enough to change someone’s entire life.

Easter is a time where we celebrate the life and reign of our Lord Jesus and the life He’s given to us! This is a season of saying ‘thank you’ to the one who’s given us everything! I encourage you to take a moment every day this week, as we’re approaching Easter Sunday to express your gratitude to the Lord who gave His all for you!

Thank God for his son.
Thank God for the empty tomb.
Thank God for His life flowing through your veins.
Thank God for his unconditional, uncontainable love.

As you’re preparing for this season and engaging in the Easter egg hunts, helping prep for scrumptious lunches, and indulging in the chocolate-covered treats, I encourage you to remain focused on the reason for our celebration: Christ. And, when someone asks you why you’re so excited, remind them of the resurrection and the truth that God not only died for but also got up for them!

If you have questions about what Jesus did on the cross, we would love to process with you.
