So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. Genesis 1:27

God is a creator. We are made in His likeness and because of that we can be creators as well. Throughout my life, I have been encouraged to tap into my creative side. Writing took the forefront of my creative outlets from an early age, followed by photography, then dance, singing, and piano-playing.

I list all these different creative outlets to say that I believe there is an innate desire within each of us to create. And it doesn’t have to fit the stereotypical creative mold. There is creativity within science, within learning a foreign language, and within organizing your home. God has given each of us this need to create because it is a way we can further understand His character. He is a creative God - artistic, skilled, and design-driven.

I was a dancer from age 3 all the way into college, dancing for a year at my university. But I am a photographer now. Though I’ve been cultivating my love for photography my whole life, it has only been in the last year that I’ve intentionally dedicated myself to the craft. The creative process of photography - capturing a moment, building the composition of a photo, noticing different angles, adjusting the posture of your subject so the image is engaging, resisting my desire to pose and just letting the natural occur. And then I experience creativity in the editing process, as I decide which tones should be brought out to capture the mood I want to convey.

I have completely fallen in love with the creative process of photography. When I am creating, whether it’s capturing senior photos for someone or sitting behind my screen watching the way shadows and light juxtapose one another, I feel close to God. I am so present and so focused that a giant, God-given peace descends over me and all I am is there. In that moment when my shutter clicks, I am all there. I am present. Everything else falls away, and I feel God call out to me - you are okay.

Anxiety can fall away when I am creating because creating is a God-given pleasure that mirrors only a small percentage of the unimaginable joy that awaits us in heaven. Little bothers that typically percolate through the folds of my mind evaporate when I experience a divine connection between my heart and God’s heart that only comes through creating. I am in tune with God when I create. I'm like God when I create. He understands what it’s like to make something and want it to be for good.

God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning - the sixth day. Genesis 1:31
